


The 30th Anniversary of the ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Child was marked in conjunction with World Children’s Day celebration at Department of Social Welfare in Yangon on Wednesday.
The ceremony was attended by Yangon Region Minister of Social Affairs and government representatives as well as NGOs, with cultural performances by groups of children.
Director, Department of Social Welfare, Dr. Kay Thi Kyaw said “Our, Department of Social Welfare has newly enacted Child Rights Law; a child is defined as anyone under the age of 18 in July 2019. And we implemented the rights of child focusing on survival, development, protection and participation with the support of the Government and NGOs during 30 years.”
The convention on the rights of child is a UN human rights treaty outlining the distinct right of children. The guiding principles of the CRC include non-discrimination, the best interest of the child, participation, the right to life and survival and development and respect for the views of the child.
Myanmar ratified the convention in 1991, two years after its enactment in 1989.Myanamr, which continuously gives priority to the welfare of children, maintained its tradition of working for the well-being of children after becoming a signatory to the convention.
Student, Young Women Training Center (Malika), La Pyae Wane said “I have joined the school since 12 years old. And my teachers and friends are very warmly welcome to me. I didn’t know the Child Rights before arriving the school. Now I am attending Grade-10 and I have to study not only lessons but also vocational courses at the school. I am very happy for participating in this event.”
Over 180 children from schools such as Preschool, School for the Deaf and Blind and Disability Training School under the Department of Social Welfare participated in the ceremony.
