


The closing ceremony of the 4th Sign Language Supporters Training was held at the School for the Deaf in Yangon on Wednesday.
JICA Myanmar and Department of Social Welfare jointly organized Promotion of the Social Participation of the Deaf Community. The activity includes 2 projects to foster environment in which the disabled, civil society and government officials jointly conduct activities since 2007. 9 Sign Language Trainers were turned out from the projects – the trainers started giving Sign Language Supporters Training in 2013. Totaling 80 Sign Language Supporters including 18 from this 4th training which started in 2018 have been turned out. Those who completed the training have been doing sign language services in education, health, legislation and social sectors.
Director, Department of Social Welfare, Dr. Kay Thi Kyaw said “We want everyone in the country to know sign language. There are a lot of sign languages used in many national races. That’s why we created the Myanmar standard sign language for all in cooperation with JICA, and we’ve been giving training.”
At the ceremony, those who completed the 4th training were presented with certificates of completion of the Sign Language Supporters Training. One of the supporters shared her experiences.
Win Thandar said “I’m from MRTV. Using what I learnt from the training, I’ll take sign language task for the hearing-impaired persons in news broadcasting. I will try my best.”
Department of Social Welfare is going to organize more training to nurture more Sign Language Trainers, Supporters and Interpreters. There are plans to give Sign Language Services in all the sates and regions, it’s learnt.
