Gas, ash blight blue skies after Peru volcano blows

The Sabancaya volcano erupted on Thursday, spewing a massive column of ash and volcanic material high into the sky over southern Peru. According to official sources, the eruption reached approximately 7,600 meters into the air. A webcam set up near the volcano captured the moment a plume of gas and ash reached about 4,000 meters into the blue sky.

Sabancaya is a stratovolcano located in the Peruvian department of Arequipa. It is one of Peru's most active volcanoes.
