A full-size replica of an 18th century, three-mast, ocean-going wooden tall galleon that sank in 1745 entered the Swedish capital Stockholm on Thursday ahead of a journey to Asia.
The nearly 60-meter long Götheborg of Sweden, billed as the world's largest wooden sailing ship in operation, has been conducting sea trials ahead of its departure early 2021 for its final destination, China.
The trip aims to promote trade relations and sustainability. The vessel will be stopping in London, Lisbon, Palma de Mallorca, Athens, Alexandria, Djibouti, Muscat, Chennai, Singapore, Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong and Shanghai. The ship was owned by the Swedish East India Company, a company that traded with China and completed a total of 132 voyages with 37 ships until it ceased in 1813. In 1984, the vessel's wreckage was found after the idea to make a replica of the vessel emerged. In 1995, the building of the replica started and eight years later, it was launched. It is the first time in six years that the ship is sailing and sea trials were needed to test to equipment and train up the crew.
