2026 World Environment Day is celebrated under the theme "A Global Call for Climate Action", at Yezin University of Forestry and Environmental Science in Nay Pyi Taw on Friday.
President U Min Aung Hlaing attended the event and made a speech. The President called for working together to address climate change, which is causing rising temperatures, extreme weather, and more frequent natural disasters around the world.
He noted that Myanmar is among the countries most affected by climate change, facing intense heat, storms, floods, and other environmental challenges. To reduce these impacts, the government is promoting renewable energy, energy-efficient technologies, climate-friendly agriculture, better waste management, electric vehicles, and large-scale tree planting and forest conservation. Millions of trees have already been planted across the country, with more planned in the coming years.
The President stressed that protecting forests and increasing green spaces are essential for reducing climate change and urged all citizens, organizations, and government agencies to cooperate in protecting the environment and building a sustainable, climate-resilient future for the next generations. This was followed by presenting prizes to the winners of ASEAN awards, and national level awards as well as the commemorative article, and essay contests.
The celebration also features the video messages of the UN Secretary General and Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme. After the ceremony, the President and party took a tour of an exhibition, commemorating the World Environment Day.
