Shetland Island's annual fire festival included women and girls in its procession for the first time on Tuesday in a tradition lasting over 100 years in Lerwick.

Up Helly Aa has 1,000 lit torches paraded around the town alongside a Viking-style galley which is later the center of the community bonfire. The members of the procession - known as Up Helly Aa guizers - must be residents of the town for more than 5 years to participate and this year no gender restrictions were in place.
