Peru is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, but it is also deeply affected by animal trafficking. Authorities estimate more than 80,000 animals have been smuggled from the country in the past two decades.

As of 2022 World Wildlife Day on Thursday, Peru has over 300 species considered at risk of trafficking. Species of frogs, birds, turtles and monkeys are among those seized by authorities at airports and markets.

The Huachipa Zoo in Lima takes care of wounded animals recovered by authorities and keeps them in conservation. Oceana Peru, an international conservation organization, is pushing for legislation for animal trafficking crimes to be considered as organized crime.
