Wildlife and nature enthusiasts can now observe Popa langurs with authorized permission, according to the warden of the Popa Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary. These langurs are found in the volcanic valley of Mount Popa, an extinct volcano situated about 11 miles northeast of Kyaukpadaung Township in NyaungU District, Mandalay Region.
The Popa langur, named after the volcano where its largest population resides of around 100 individuals, has existed for at least a million years, according to research. However, with only 200 to 250 remaining in the wild, experts recommend classifying this leaf-eating species as 'critically endangered.' There are over 20 species of langurs globally, with several facing similar threats. To protect the Popa langur, officials are encouraging local communities to engage in conservation efforts, including reforestation, a ban on hunting, and sustainable resource management. These actions are vital in preventing the species from going extinct.
