About 232 million gallons of water is being supplied daily to the residents of the Yangon City from Hlawga, Gyo Phyu, Phu Gyi and Nga Moe Yeik reservoirs. To be able to supply sufficient water to the residents of the Yangon City, the Water & Sanitation Department under Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) is providing water supply with surface water supply system and ground water supply system.
Thwet Naing Oo, Deputy Head Officer, Water & Sanitation Department (YCDC), said " We are providing water supply for 33 townships of Yangon through surface water supply system and ground water supply system. The 92 % of supply water is from surface water sources and 8% is from ground water sources. We have been conducting new water supply project called Lagoon Pyin water supply project since May 2021. Before the new project, we were able to provide 203 million gallons of water daily. Now, we can provide 232 million gallons of water a day. Currently, the average amount of water supply is 225 million gallons of water a day due to lacking electricity supply and some maintenance process for transmission and distribution pipes."
Water supply is provided to East Yangon Townships for 24 hours a day but the other townships are provided according to the schedule. Due to weather conditions and increased population, the water level of the reservoirs are decreased gradually. Therefore, the water level of the reservoirs need to be maintained before the new water supply projects are completed.
