An image of the 363-foot-tall Saturn V rocket that carried the Apollo 11 crew to the moon 50 years ago was projected on the facade of the Washington Monument on Tuesday. NASA is aiming to send humans back to the moon as soon as 2024 in a hastened timeline set by U.S. Vice President Mike Pence in a March speech to the National Space Council.

The Apollo 11 Saturn V rocket was launched on July 16, 1969 from Kennedy Space Center's Launch Pad 39A. in the historic moon mission, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin become the first men to step foot on the lunar surface. That mission was an event that enraptured Americans and marked a pre-eminent chapter in human spaceflight.
