Cameroonians voted on Sunday in a presidential election in which 92-year-old Paul Biya, the world’s oldest serving head of state, is widely expected to win another term, extending his 43 years in power.
Biya, who has ruled since 1982, faces several challengers, including former government spokesperson IssaTchiroma, 76. Analysts say Biya remains the frontrunner due to his long-standing control of state institutions and the divided opposition.
Voting took place under tight security, particularly in the capital, Yaoundé, where turnout was steady at polling stations such as those in the Bastos neighbourhood near the presidential palace. Critics of the government continue to call for leadership change, citing economic challenges and ongoing tensions in parts of the country. Official results have not yet been announced.
