Violence Elimination: Int’l Day for Elimination of Violence against Women

Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement on Friday held a ceremony to markthe International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women falling on November 25. During the ceremony at the Ministry in Nay Pyi Taw,

Union Minister Dr. Thet Thet Khaing said that the period between November 25th and December 10th every year is the 16-day campaign to eliminate violence against women so that the awareness for the elimination of gender-based violence will be widened, and that efforts to eliminate violence against women in various ways can be increased.

In 2020, during the outbreak of the Covid-19 disease in the countries of the world, the rate of violence against women has increased according to the observations. Myanmar has been working to achieve gender equality to and empower all women and young ones.

It’s also been implementing recommendations of the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (UNCEDAW), the Beijing Declaration, the United Nations Security Council resolutions and the joint declaration on prevention and response to sexual violence during conflict and also participating in efforts to eliminate violence against women and children in the ASEAN region. She also highlighted the Ministry’s efforts for women including helpline service, online services, assistance to victims of violence and opening of One Stop Women Support centers.

The United Nations General Assembly has designated November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The premise of the day is to raise awareness around the world that women are subjected to rape, domestic violence and other forms of violence. This year’s theme is UNITE! Activism to End Violence against Women & Girls.
