The number of COVID-19 cases in the United States mounted to 3.95 million, with 142,942 deaths by Wednesday, according to Johns Hopkins University. California surpassed New York to be the state with most cases, namely 415,000. The number of cases in New York, Florida and Texas reached 408,886, 379,619 and 359,722, respectively.

The COVID-19 pandemic is having a devastating economic and human impact on California childcare centers, according to study from the University of California. The surge in U.S. coronavirus cases left labs falling behind in processing and delivering test results, with the turnaround time for COVID-19 tests taking seven or more days, Quest Diagnostics a leading U.S. diagnostic service company, said earlier this month. Diagnostic testing companies in the country said the demand for COVID-19 testing is outpacing their capacity.
