United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix on Saturday visited Lebanese army soldiers and UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon. Lacroix’s visit comes a month after a mob killed 24 year-old Irish Pvt. Seán Rooney of Newtown Cunningham, which took place near the southern town of Al-Aqbiya.

He visited Camp Shamrock, the headquarters of the Irish contingent of the UN’s peacekeeping forces in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL. Lacroix expressed his condolences for the death of Private Rooney and called for the perpetrators to be held accountable. UNIFIL and Ireland are also conducting investigations.
