The United Nations on Tuesday adopted a new declaration on ending the HIV/AIDS pandemic by 2030, as the head of the UN's AIDS agency warned that HIV rates were not going in the right direction.

Executive Director of UNAIDS, Winnie Byanyima said "Amidst the fallout from the COVID crisis, we could even see a resurgent pandemic. But a never-ending HIV pandemic is not our fate. Even in spite of all the setbacks, we can end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030 as we promised, if the world comes together."

The declaration contains targets for countries to reach 95% of those in risk groups with HIV prevention options and to provide 95% of those who know they have HIV with treatment.
