The UN rights chief expressed concern over recent shifts in U.S. policies since Donald Trump's return to power. Addressing the United Nations Human Rights Council, Volker Turk noted a departure from the long-standing bipartisan support the U.S. had shown for human rights. He highlighted that policies meant to protect individuals from discrimination are now being seen differently and progress on gender equality is at risk of being reversed.

Turk also raised concerns about the impact of disinformation and threats against journalists, which could undermine independent media and democratic institutions. The increasing use of divisive rhetoric has also contributed to growing polarization and anxiety.
