The United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday adopted a landmark resolution that reinforces nations' legal obligations to tackle climate change. Spearheaded by Vanuatu, the resolution calls for countries to accelerate fossil fuel phase-outs, align policies with climate science, and address reparations for climate-related damages.

While UN resolutions do not establish new, direct legally binding treaties overnight, this action cements the International Court of Justice’s recent opinion that urgent climate action is a legal obligation under international law.
