U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday because the country faces an Ebola epidemic which has claimed over 2,000 lives. Gutteres will be in the African country for three days to help mobilize additional support for the Ebola outbreak and also review the U.N. peacekeeping mission.
This is Congo's 10th Ebola outbreak, but it is the first in the densely forested hillside provinces of North Kivu and Ituri, where militia-led violence and ethnic killing have undermined security in certain areas for decades. Gutteres inspected a contingent of U.N peacekeepers at a disarmament, demobilization and reintegration centre which aims to remove combatants from armed groups and help them back into society.
