U.S. President Donald Trump praised conditions at border detention facilities on Wednesday after they have recently come under fire by Congressional Democrats. Speaking in North Carolina, Trump told supporters that a delegation led by Vice President Mike Pence and members of Congress visited border detention facilities last week and reported that they were clean with air conditioning and water.
Pence's comments came while Congressional Democrats who had also visited detention centers decried the conditions in emotional testimony on Capitol Hill. Trump has made cracking down on illegal immigration a centerpiece of his administration, which is trying to deal with a surge of mostly Central American families who are crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.
