Transportation Sector: Yangon-Taungoo railway upgrade to be completed in 2024

Yangon-Mandalay railway upgrade works are underway by the Myanma Railways with the Official Development Assistance loans of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Similarly, Yangon Circular railway are also being upgraded. Railway, coaches and signal lights are being upgraded to meet the international standards to operate at the speed of 100 kilometers per hour. Yangon-Taungoo railway upgrade works started in 2018 and currently, 60 percent of the works have been completed.

Thura U Aung Myo Myint, Director General, Myanma Railways, said " The Yangon-Taungoo railway upgrade works started in 2018 October and now 60 percent has been completed. The railway lines were welded at the joints, so, the passengers can comfortably take the trains. And also, the automatic signal lights are going to be used." 

The Director General added that it is comfortable for passengers because the railways are being upgraded to meet the international standards and the new Japanese air conditioners are being installed in every coach of trains.

The Yangon-Taungoo railway upgrade works are set to complete on 31st May, 2024, followed by the Taungoo-Mandalay railway upgrade works.
