A Tanzanian national was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Kenyan court on Wednesday after being found guilty of aiding a 2015 Somali Islamist attack on Garissa University that claimed over 148 lives. Rashid Mberesero and two others, Hassan and Abdikar were convicted on June 19 for helping militants carry out the attack.

Hassan and Abdikar were handed a 41 year jail term each. Al Shabaab militants stormed Garissa University on April 2, 2015, seeking to kill Christian students in particular. Hassan and Abdikar's defence lawyer representing said his clients would dispute the conviction and sentences in an appeal to a higher court, adding that their jail terms "are as good as a death sentence."
