Tens of thousands of people gathered in Bhaktapur to mark the first day of Biska Jatra, pulling a traditional wooden chariot built in the pagoda-style to welcome the Nepali New Year.

In 2026, the Nepal New Year will be on April 14. The nine-day festival features the wedding procession of the Hindu deities Bhairav and Bhadrakali, believed to be husband and wife. The raising of the ceremonial pole , tug-of-war, and the pulling of chariots are the main attractions of the festival.
