A joint session of Thailand's Senate and House of Representatives was convened on Tuesday for the election of a new prime minister. Pheu Thai party formally nominated business tycoon Srettha Thavisin to become prime minister.

Srettha is expected to win the vote and become prime minister at the head of a coalition including several pro-military parties from the outgoing government. Pheu Thai together with its new coalition now have 314 votes in hands, but it needs 60 more from MPs and senators to be able to form a government.
