Taxis must install trip recorders and accept e-payment in Hong Kong

The government in Hong Kong has gazette to require all taxis to install a video and audio recording system, and to allow passengers to pay fares electronically. The location of the taxi will also be recorded through a global satellite navigation system.

The Transport Department will begin to authorize suppliers in the fourth quarter of this year, with the aim of allowing the taxi industry to install the trip recording systems from next year, which will be connected to the Transport Department’s system.

The authorities believe that this will help deter taxi drivers from improper behavior and improve safety. As for the requirement that taxi drivers must accept electronic payment of fares, it will take effect on April 1 next year.
