On the Atat day of the Myanmar Traditional Maha Thingyan on Saturday, Shan State Chief Minister Dr. Kyaw Tun and officials visited the central water pavilion in Taunggyi.

They enjoyed the traditional performances staged by cultural troupes and musicians. The Chief Minister also presented cash awards to the cultural troupes and musicians.

Thingyan is the first ever water festival celebrated in the world or the earliest water festival in water festivals. Thingyan has been celebrated since the Tagaung period (1-10 AD) and became famous during the Bagan period (12 AD).

It is a festival celebrated over a period of four to five days, culminating in the New Year.
