The first underwater tunnel in Bangladesh and South Asia, built by China, is expected to be handed over this October. Located at the estuary of the Karnaphuli River in the country's second largest city, Chattogram, the tunnel will shorten the travel time between both sides from one hour to just under 10 minutes.

According to the findings, an estimated 6.3 million vehicles will traverse the tunnel annually, facilitating the movement of more than 17,500 vehicles each day. Looking ahead to 2025, it is anticipated that an average of 28,305 vehicles will utilize the tunnel daily. A significant moment came when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Chinese President Xi Jinping jointly laid the foundation stone on October 14, 2016.
