Severe weather hits Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s Department of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning, forecasting heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm across several provinces, particularly in the southwest. Driven by a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal, located 1,100 km northeast of Kankesanthurai, strong winds reaching up to 70 km/h have prompted urgent warnings for deep-sea fishing vessels to avoid maritime operations.

Heavy precipitation has triggered minor flood alerts across southern river basins. The National Building Research Organisation has extended Level 3 (Red) landslide evacuation warnings in some areas, with officials urging high-risk residents to evacuate immediately.
