QR codes replace cash registers at Japanese supermarket branch Yokohama and it is being launched on Friday. The new system is in a section of a branch of Aeon Food Style in the supermarket. Customers need to download a smartphone app.
This gives them a QR code. When entering the section, they let a scanner read the code. Payment takes place automatically through a credit card registered with the app. Thirty-five cameras in the celling and weight sensors embedded in the store's shelves identify the products being sold.
The system can determine that items are not sold when customers pick them up and put them back on the shelf. An official of the supermarket operator said customers can finish their shopping quickly during the busy hours just by taking the items and leaving.
