French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday that it was a "moral duty" to help African countries vaccinate their populations against COVID-19.

Macron made the comment when he visited a vaccination centre in the Rwandan capital Kigali with his Foreign Minister Jean Yves Le Drian. Speaking to journalists, Macron said that helping nations such as Rwanda reach herd immunity was in the interest of countries worldwide to "understand the virus better." Macron's visit to Rwanda is the first by a French president in 11 years.
