President Gustavo Petro inaugurates Colombia's new Congress

Gustavo Petro, president of Colombia, inaugurated the new legislative term of the Congress of Colombia, 2026–2030. Petro will leave office on August 7. Petro has promised a peaceful transition but said on Tuesday that he will not attend the inauguration on August 7. The new Congress faces a first test for President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella, an outsider without a party who seeks to build legislative majorities to move forward with his reforms.
