Peruvian paleontologists unveiled the fossil of a 10-million-year-old extinct crocodile at a presentation in Lima.

It is the first juvenile remains of the species, the Piscogavialis gharial crocodile, to be found, said paleontologist Mario Gamarra, which researchers hope will shed light on the animal's evolution.

Researchers recognize the Ocucaje Desert as a place rich in fossils, where more than two decades ago those of four-legged dwarf whales, dolphins, sharks and other species from the Miocene period between 5 and 23 million years were discovered.
