The North's Korean Central News Agency released just four still images of the giant missile blasting into the sky, saying that the launch took place at Pyongyang's international airport. That airport is in Sunan, a suburb of the capital, and has been used for missile launches before.

The details were similar to North Korea’s Hwasong-17 intercontinental ballistic missile test flight in November, which experts said demonstrated potential to reach the U.S. mainland if fired on a normal trajectory.  North Korea has halted weapons testing activities since its short-range missile firing on Jan. 1, though it launched more than 70 missiles in 2022 — a record number for a single year.
