The opening ceremony of the Neonatal Resuscitation Training, organized by the Department of Public Health under the Ministry of Health was held at the Myanmar CDC Theater in Nay Pyi Taw on December 24.

The Union Minister for Health, Dr. Thet Khaing Win, attended the event and delivered the opening speech. In his speech, the Union Minister mentioned that according to the World Health Organization's report on child mortality (2022), Myanmar has made progress in reducing child mortality under the age of five.

The neonatal mortality rate, which was 37.3 per 1,000 live births in 2000, decreased to 21 per 1,000 live births in 2022. The under-one-year-old child mortality rate, which was 60.7 per 1,000 live births in 2000, dropped to 32 per 1,000 live births in 2022.

Additionally, the under-five-year-old child mortality rate, which was 83.2 per 1,000 live births in 2000, has decreased to 40 per 1,000 live births in 2022. With these improvements, the Union Minister stated that if these efforts continue, Myanmar will be able to meet its target by 2030.

The Union Minister also emphasized that the first minute after birth is crucial for the development and survival of the child’s brain, and this is why the training is so important. The necessary medicines, medical supplies, and equipment for neonatal resuscitation have been provided, and ongoing training is necessary to ensure proficiency.

The Neonatal Resuscitation Training will take place from December 24 to 27and will be attended by 286 health professionals, including assistant doctors, nurses, midwives, and obstetricians, currently serving in the Union Territory of Nay Pyi Taw.

The training will combine theoretical and practical lessons. Additional training sessions will be conducted in regions such as Yangon, Mandalay, Magway, Shan State (Taunggyi), and other regions and states.
