The Myanmar Durian Festival kicked off on May 19 at Myay Pedettha Island in Bahan Township, Yangon, with a vibrant display of Myanmar’s native durian varieties.
The festival brought together key stakeholders, including officials from the Myanmar Fruit, Flower and Vegetable Producer and Exporter Association, the Myanmar Durian Growers and Exporters Association, and dedicated local durian growers.
Chairman, Myanmar Durian Growers and Exporters Association, Kyaw Min said " This Durian Festival is held under the guidance of the Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, following the previous year’s durian forum to support access to global markets. Foreign embassies are attending the event, while six regions and states including Yangon, Bago, Ayeyarwaddy, Mon, Kayin, and Tanintharyi are showcasing local and foreign durian varieties. The festival helps durian growers connect with international markets and explore export opportunities."
Launched with the objective of transforming locally cultivated durians into premium export commodities, the festival aspires to secure a breakthrough for the Myanmar durian brand on the global stage. It also serves as an important platform for the exchange of knowledge, promoting modern farming techniques alongside advanced post-harvest preservation technologies.
Staff Officer, Department of Agriculture, Htay Tint said " Research is ongoing to develop disease-free and high-quality varieties suitable for global export. With the guidance of the Ministry, the Department of Agriculture aims to develop durians that are resilient to changing weather. This festival showcases 24 local varieties, where visitors can taste and identify the best ones for further propagation and wider farming."
The event forms part of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation’s Department of Agriculture 100-day government plan, reflecting a broader vision to strengthen the country’s agricultural sector and enhance export potential.
In addition, the government continues to play an active role in bridging development gaps across the sector, working to effectively address the essential needs of stakeholders and strengthen agricultural value chains for sustainable growth.
