More than 1000 residents evacuated after blaze hits Gran Canaria

A video taken by a member of Gran Canaria's town hall shows firefighting operations to control the massive wildfire that hit the island on Sunday. The blaze which started on Saturday in Artenara was declared contained by authorities on Sunday evening but adverse weather conditions have allowed it to continue to rage out of control.

About 1,000 people were unable to return to their homes in Gran Canaria after several towns were evacuated because a vast wildfire spread towards a National Park and an area popular with holidaymakers on the Spanish island, emergency services said.
