Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador signed into law controversial judicial reforms on Sunday, making the country the first to elect all its judges by popular vote.

Outgoing leftist leader Lopez Obrador signed the decree in a video posted on social media, hailing the "historic day”.Lopez Obrador has frequently criticized the judiciary since taking office in 2018, especially the country's Supreme Court.

He had argued the overhaul was needed for the interests of ordinary citizens to be better served. He was accompanied by president-elect Claudia Sheinbaum who will replace him on 1st October following her landslide election win in June.
