Media outlets in Peru have declared that right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori has beaten her leftist opponent, Roberto Sanchez, in the country's presidential runoff.

The move came after the electoral authority released the final vote count on Monday. Fujimori reportedly won 50.1 percent of the votes in the early June runoff, while Sanchez received 49.9 percent. Sanchez has indicated that he will contest the results.

The electoral authority is due to officially announce the winner as early as July 3. Fujimori is the eldest daughter of former President Alberto Fujimori, who died in 2024. Sanchez is a former foreign trade and tourism minister. Fujimori wrote on social media on Monday that she is waiting for the official announcement.
