Animals in Madrid's zoo were served frozen food to cool off amid sweltering temperatures as an unusual heatwave broiled Spain.

Zookeepers fed pandas and bears with watermelon popsicles, seals with frozen sardines and lions with frozen buckets of meat.Spain is set for highs of 42C in the southern cities of Córdoba and Sevilla, according to weather forecasts. Zookeepers said some of the animal enclosures are equipped with air conditioning and pools and they showered the four-legged residents, including rhinos and tortoises, several times a day to make sure they stayed fresh and cool. Many animals also hid in the shadows much to the chagrin of visitors and children who came to see them and could not.
