At least 100 elephants have died in Hwange National Park of Zimbabwe as water holes have dried up, an International Fund for Animal Welfare said on Monday.
Hwange covers more than 14,600 square kilometers and is home to about 45,000 elephants. Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority reported many animals moving from the national park to neighboring Botswana in search of water and food.
Zimbabwe has around 100,000 elephants, the second largest population in the world and almost double the capacity its parks can take, conservationists said. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has classified southern Africa as a region at risk, facing increased probability of extreme heat and reduced rainfall due to global warming.
