Japan has relaxed mask guidelines in place since the COVID-19 pandemic.Mask wearing was made optional at the ceremony for this year’s graduates. Traditionally in Japan, graduates wear suits or traditional Japanese outfits for graduation ceremonies but Kyoto University has its own tradition of students who opt for different attire on their special day.
Other graduates were seen dressed as characters like “Chikawa” and even a pepper-mill grinder which was a symbol of celebration started by baseball player Lars Nootbaar and also popularized in Japan during the WBC.
