The Philippine government shut down more than 47,000 public schools nationwide from Monday, days after the Manila temperature soared to a record high clocking 38.8 degrees Celsius at the weekend.

Many schools in the tropical country have no air conditioning and students must sweat it out in poorly ventilated classrooms. And, students are trying to finish their homework at homes before the afternoon sun sent temperatures soaring to unbearable levels. It’s reported that more than 7,000 of schools were still closed Thursday as the heat persisted.
