Near the Dune de Pilat in Arcachon Bay, Banc d'Arguin sandbar has shrunk from seven kilometers in 2020 to just two kilometers. The area, designated as a nature reserve, provides a nesting ground for seabirds and supports diverse plant and marine species.

Scientists describe the erosion as unprecedented, driven by winter storms, spring tides, and ongoing natural tidal activity. Nearly 90% of the vegetated dunes have disappeared, and the sandbar continues to narrow, exposing the site to further natural erosion. Authorities continue to monitor the area to assess impacts on bird populations, plant life, and the broader ecosystem, emphasizing the importance of preserving the site’s biodiversity.
