
Several injuries, collapsed buildings, and fires have been reported following a powerful earthquake in southwestern Japan Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said on Tuesday.
At least 50 people were taken to hospital with injuries, according to broadcaster NHK. Twelve houses were reported to have collapsed, including four cases where people were trapped inside. Authorities are assessing the full extent of the damage, with reports of power outages, road and bridge damage, and fires in affected areas.
Residents are urged to remain alert, as further earthquakes of similar intensity could occur in the coming days. The Japanese government is continuing its response efforts as emergency teams monitor the situation and assist affected communities.
