Japan observes first total lunar eclipse in about three years

Sky-gazers in Japan have been treated to a nighttime spectacle called a total lunar eclipse. This is the first time in about three years that the striking phenomenon has been observed in the country. The celestial event happens when the Earth aligns between the Sun and the Moon.

During the moment, the Moon changes color to a deep red hue by sunlight filtered through Earth's atmosphere. The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan said the eclipse started unfolding at on Monday, when the Moon was in the southwestern sky. It added totality came at around Monday morning. The observatory said the next chance to see a total lunar eclipse in Japan will be on March 3, 2026.
