Italian coastguard members rescued six migrants who were stranded in the sea in danger of drowning off the coast of the southern Italian island of Lampedusa on Monday. The migrants were spotted in the water by a Frontex aircraft at around 10.00 a.m swimming nearby a small rickety wooden boat carrying another 11 migrants.

Footage showed a coastguard diver swimming out to rescue two of the migrants who were in the water without lifejackets. The coastguard patrol boat then went on to rescue the migrants on the drifting boat. The total of 17 migrants were found around four miles off Lampedusa's coast.
