Hungary's foreign minister said Hungary will provide care to several dozen COVID-19 patients from neighboring Romania in the coming days.

Hungary would accept 50 Romanian patients into two intensive care clinics in the Hungarian cities of Szeged and Debrecen, both near the Romanian border.  Romania has in recent weeks grappled with a dramatic surge in infections and deaths amid low vaccination rates and an ailing health care system.

Coronavirus infections there have skyrocketed over the last month from around 2,000 daily cases to record highs of nearly 17,000.  Romania's total number of coronavirus deaths stands at just over 40,000.
