The first museum show dedicated to Hollywood's painted backdrops is making its world premiere in South Florida at the Boca Raton Museum of Art.

The exhibition of 22 backdrops, made for films between 1938 and 1968, honors the artists who created these massive paintings for the camera lens.

The uncredited artists made scenes of Mount Rushmore, Rome depicted in "Ben-Hur," the Von Trapp Family's Austrian Alps, and Gene Kelly's Paris Street dance possible.

The show's immersive components include interactive video reels created in Hollywood specifically for this exhibition, telling the stories behind each backdrop.

Irvin Lippman, Executive Director, Boca Raton Museum of Art said "They're huge, they're mammoth. But I think most importantly, it's a celebration of the artists who never got any screen credit at all. But we're celebrating those artists who actually painted, by hand, these mammoth works of art, some of the largest scenic paintings ever created."

"Art of the Hollywood Backdrop: Cinema's Creative Legacy" runs from April 20, 2022 through January 22, 2023.
