Health Research Congress: 53rd Myanmar Health Research Congress opened

The 53rd Myanmar Health Research Congress opening ceremony was held at the Department of Medical Research, No. 5, Ziwaka Road in Dagon Township of Yangon Region on January 20.

First, Chairman of State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing delivered a speech via video message.  In his speech, the Prime Minister highlighted that the congress, now in its 53rd year, aims to elevate Myanmar’s health research to international standards.

First held in 1965, it evolved over time, adding poster exhibitions in 1991 and expanding academic exchanges since 2002. The Prime Minister stated that the theme of the 53rd Myanmar Health Research Congress, "Moving forward to a healthy lifestyle and addressing health risk behaviors," focuses on the rising importance of non-communicable diseases.

He added that the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with other relevant ministries, successfully managed disease prevention, control and treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the WHO and several health departments are conducting the “Step Survey - 2024” to assess the risk of non-communicable diseases in Myanmar etc.

The Prime Minister concluded his speech, emphasizing the need to increase practical applied research, raise public awareness through conferences and publications, and focus on treatment and hospital administration. He expressed hope that health research will help establish appropriate policies, ensuring universal access to quality healthcare and improving the country's healthcare standards.

Next, the Union Minister for Health, Professor Dr. Thet Khaing Win, gave the opening remarks. After that, the Director-General of the Department of Medical Research, Professor Dr. Aye Aye Khin, gave a welcome address. Participants then gathered for a group photograph.

After the opening ceremony, Union Minister Professor Dr. Thet Khin Win, Yangon Region Chief Minister U Soe Thein, Region Government Ministers, and health researchers, as well as key researchers who will present their papers, visited the research poster exhibition.

This year's congress will feature experts from Peking University in China, Pusan National University and Kangwon National University in Korea, Nagasaki University in Japan, and Sheik Mujib Medical University in Bangladesh, who will present and discuss their research during symposiums and scientific talks throughout the conference, it’s learnt.
