Global Geopark: National Level Geopark Committee Held Its First Meeting

The first meeting of National Level Geopark Committee was held at the forest department, Nay Pyi Taw on Monday.

At the meeting, the Chairman of National Level Geopark Committee Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation U Khin Maung Yi said that UNESCO commenced the Global Geopark program in 2001 and there are 169 Global Geoparks in 44 countries.

Among many candidate sites possessed good potentials to be recognized as Global Geopark in Myanmar, Mount Poppa region has the maximum potentials. Before proposing as global geopark, the implementations are being carried out to designate national level geopark first. The Poppa region national level geopark will be proposed with 15 Geosites.

If a national level geopark can be established, the Geo-tourism industry will be developed, the conservation of the region as treasured possession can be showcased to the visitors and it will be a good example for the next generations. As the Global Geopark is based on the three pillars such as geoconservation, local and indigenous knowledge and sustainable development, only with the cooperation of management authorities and the subject and research agencies, the goal of the success will be reached.

Next, the committee secretary clarified the implemenation for the resignation of Mount Poppa region as national level geopark and the chairman of Myanmar Geoscience Society explained the national level geopark draft proposal. Then, the committee members suggested relevant sector and the reviewing the reports, supplementing necessaries and setting the future work plans were carried out.
