Thousands of people waving rainbow flags poured onto the streets of Madrid for one of the world's largest gay pride events on Saturday, asserting the rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Dozens of colourful floats were commissioned to roll through the city in a spectacle that has become familiar in Spain, which in 2005 became only the third country in the world to allow gay marriage.

Before the float parade, thousands joined a protest claiming for the rights of the LGBT community. Political tension crept into the parade when protesters blocked the path down the central boulevard of representatives from centre-right group Ciudadanos (Citizens). On Saturday, a group of people temporarily interrupted the parade in front of Ciudadanos representatives.
